members and their staff. Take it up.
In an edition documenting cost pressure from every direction, this article is the exception, and it is deliberate. Through our collaboration with the Chartered Institute for Business Accountants (CIBA), announced in our previous edition, a full CIBA short course in bookkeeping is now available to (SA)UEO members at no cost. The offer extends to business members and their staff, and to our organisers and their staff.
The course is called Bookkeeping Without Guesswork, and the name describes the problem it solves. The standard course fee is R2 300, VAT inclusive. Under the current promotional offer, enrolment is at no charge, to be confirmed on enrolment.

Weak bookkeeping is one of the most common and least visible threats to a small business. CIBA describes it plainly in the course material: cash flow blind spots, VAT errors and missed deadlines compound quietly until they threaten the survival of the business, and the problem usually starts months earlier, in a poorly kept ledger.
This edition of Heads-Up asks members to do specific, practical things: to audit which crisis-era cost increases have quietly become permanent, to re-run cashflow projections at a higher prime rate, to model the cost of compliance obligations arriving in September, and to build the documentary record that employment equity assessment and retrenchment fairness both depend on. Every one of those actions assumes something that is not true in every business: numbers the owner can trust. This course exists to make it true.
The offer is also wider than the owner’s own desk. Because it extends to staff, a member can use it to train the administrator who actually captures the books, the office manager who runs payroll, or the family member who handles invoicing, at no cost, with a recognised certificate at the end. Capability of that kind usually costs money the business does not have. This time it does not.

The course follows the real bookkeeping workflow of a small business across 13 chapters: what bookkeeping is and where it sits in the business, accounting basics, source documents and recordkeeping, journals and ledgers, cash and bank management, debtors and creditors, the accounting cycle in practice, payroll basics in the South African context, VAT and basic tax, financial reporting for small entities, technology tools, budgeting basics, and ethics and professionalism.
Two chapters deserve particular mention for this membership. The payroll chapter covers PAYE, UIF and SDL, the monthly obligations where employer errors are most expensive. The VAT chapter works through standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt supplies and the difference between input and output VAT, which is where CIBA reports small businesses most often go wrong. The course is self-study, takes 25 hours in total, and is completed at the learner’s own pace.

The first webinar in our joint series with CIBA has taken place, and the response from members confirmed what the collaboration was built on: the appetite for practical, employer-focused financial guidance is real.
Two things flow from it. First, the insights gained from the session are being developed into a practical guide, which will be distributed to members once complete. Second, the next webinar in the series is scheduled for October, and details will be shared closer to the time.
The series belongs to the membership, and we would like the topics to come from you. Members are invited to submit the questions and subjects they most want covered to info@saueo.co.za.
The strongest position an employer can hold in the second half of 2026 is a clear view of its own numbers. That view is built, not bought, and for members it is now built for free. Enrol yourself, enrol the person who keeps your books, and take the full value of a collaboration that was created precisely for moments like this one.
