South African labour law requires that every employee-regardless of whether they work in a home or a business-must have a written contract of employment. This contract should outline basic conditions such as working hours, pay, leave entitlements, notice periods, and job responsibilities.
Even if you’ve had a verbal agreement in place for years, a written contract protects both you and your employee and is the first step in creating a fair and lawful workplace.

Yes. If you employ a domestic worker for more than 24 hours a month, you are legally required to register with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), contribute monthly, and submit declarations.
As the employer, you must deduct 1% from your employee’s wages and contribute an additional 1% from your side—bringing the total UIF contribution to 2% of their monthly pay.
UIF protects your worker if they lose their job, take maternity leave, or fall ill for an extended period.
