Free Bookkeeping Short Course

In partnership with the Chartered Institute for Business Accountants (CIBA)

(SA)UEO has entered into a formal collaboration with the Chartered Institute for Business Accountants (CIBA) — and one of the first and most tangible benefits of that partnership is coming directly to you.

Through this collaboration, all (SA)UEO members will have access to CIBA’s Bookkeeping Short Course at no cost. The course is self-paced, self-study, delivered online through CIBA’s professional development platform, and results in a certificate of completion. It is designed specifically for non-accountants — the business owners, managers and administrators who handle the day-to-day financial administration of a business without necessarily having a formal accounting background.

We are currently finalising the dedicated access link for (SA)UEO members. That link — and full enrolment details — will be communicated to all members by dedicated emailer and WhatsApp as soon as it is ready. What we want to do right now is introduce the partnership, explain what is coming, and make sure you understand why we believe it matters.

Who CIBA is

The Chartered Institute for Business Accountants is a recognised professional body representing more than 10,000 accounting professionals across South Africa. Established in 1987, CIBA is statutorily recognised under the National Qualifications Framework Act and serves as the controlling body for tax practitioners under the Tax Administration Act.

CIBA’s membership base is made up of bookkeepers, financial administrators, business accountants, financial managers and accountants-in-practice — professionals who work directly with South African businesses, many of them SMEs, as their trusted financial advisors.

The partnership between (SA)UEO and CIBA is built on a straightforward observation: the challenges facing South African employers in 2026 are both labour-related and financial. Regulatory compliance, cost management, record-keeping, payroll accuracy and financial governance are not separate concerns — they are interconnected. An employer who understands both is better positioned than one who understands only one.

The Bookkeeping Short Course — what it covers and who it is for

The CIBA Bookkeeping Short Course is an introductory programme designed for people who are actively involved in the financial administration of a business but who do not hold a formal accounting qualification. It covers the practical fundamentals of bookkeeping — the skills that underpin accurate record-keeping, compliant payroll administration and sound day-to-day financial management.

The course is suited to members who:

The course is self-paced. There are no fixed class times and no travel required. Members complete it in their own time, at their own speed, through CIBA’s online learning platform. On completion, a digital certificate is issued by CIBA — a recognised professional body. The course is free to (SA)UEO members.

Why this matters in the current environment

This edition of Heads-Up has covered a number of developments that carry direct financial implications for employers — fuel price increases moving through supply chains, the BCEA earnings threshold change affecting payroll, the proposed doubling of severance pay in the Labour Law Amendment Bill. Each of these requires employers to understand their numbers clearly.

Accurate financial records are not only good business practice — they are a compliance requirement. Labour inspectors check payroll records. CCMA matters often turn on payslips and payment history. COIDA claims depend on accurate wage records. Employment Equity reporting requires reliable headcount and remuneration data.

An employer who maintains accurate, well-organised financial records is better placed to navigate compliance obligations, to respond to inspections, and to make informed decisions about cost management. The Bookkeeping Short Course is a practical step toward that capability.

What is coming — beyond the bookkeeping course

The bookkeeping course is the first and most immediately accessible element of the (SA)UEO–CIBA collaboration — but it is not the only one. The two organisations are also planning a joint webinar series under the positioning “Empowering Employers through Compliance and Financial Literacy”, bringing together expertise in labour law and financial governance in a format designed specifically for the South African SME employer.

Details of the webinar series — including dates, topics and registration information — will be announced in the next edition of Heads-Up and communicated to members through our regular channels.
